Tumour markers are substances which are present (generally proteins) in the blood (possibly in urine or other fluids) of cancer patients and (theoretically) absent in healthy persons, therefore suggesting that their presence signifies the presence of cancer.
Although this chapter deals with classical tumour markers, new discoveries in proteomics (study of the blood or tissue proteins) may shortly lead us to totally change our approach to tumour markers.
